Mrs Timothy Huang nee Chng Siok Un's Cousin on Her Mother's Side

One famous relative is Ng Boxu Neo's/Mrs Huang's cousin, the late Rev. Yap Un Han/Yap En Han/Ye Enhan (葉恩漢/叶恩汉 1914 - 1995), who was the principal of Singapore Bible College, where he is still remembered every two years.

From Timothy Tow's autobiographical Son of a Mother's Vow:

Timothy Tow's third and youngest sister, Tow Siew Mui, would marry Timothy Huang's third son and Yap Un Han's first cousin once removed, Peter Ng Eng Hoe, who gave birth to two sons, Joseph and Benjamin.

According to this Christian Methodist University document, Rev. and Mrs. Yap had apparently founded a Methodist school and kindergarten in the Sumatran city of Medan:

Additional report:

By 1956, reports the Spring Hope Enterprise, Yap would be the principal of a high school there:

Integration of foreign and local missionary leadership seemed to have been a chief concern:

T72 ceremony After the transfer of sovereignty and Indonesia back into a unitary state, then the above mindset change. By anticipating the unity and togetherness in the Methodist bodies in Indonesia also raised awareness of the need for unity and the unity of the congregation and education. Therefore in 1952, the Committee on English School merged into Central School Committee (Central Committee of the School). Committee members no longer are all missionaries, but has been excluded from the Chinese and Batak. The Central School Committee members are Alberth Hamel, Miss Jessie Wolcott, Mrs. Eric Lager, Mrs. Yap Han Un, Kim Chan Fui, Allemar Hutabarat, Mrs. A. V. Klauss, Tan Hong Ki and Mrs. Un Cheng Ho. The committee began to determine which areas need to be established Methodist schools and how to improve the quality of lecturers. For guidance it needs to be appointed supervisor Methodist school.
Not much of a slacker, Rev. Yap was very much hands-on in school work and church work, according to this report, Paths of Service: Eighteenth Annual Report of the Woman's Division of Christian Service of the Board of Missions and Church Extension of The Methodist Church, Reports June 1, 1956-May 31, 1957, Roster of Officers June 1, 1957-May 31, 1958:

In Medan a major school achievement of the year has been the completion
of a new Chinese Methodist High School building. This three-story building, a
project of the Woman's Division, was dedicated in July, and the first junior-
high class of more than one hundred students began studies in it. Though
already overloaded with pastoral and district responsibilities, Rev. Yap Un-Han
still finds time to give his guiding leadership to this school. Regular chapel
services, religious instruction for each class, a teacher's prayer and fellowship
group, and a lively Sunday school of several hundred children are among the
religious activities.

From this Indonesian Methodist history, Rev. Yap's credibility in Medan was enhanced in difficult times:

According to this Methodist report of 1958, Rev. and Mrs. Yap were "forced to return" from the field:

$11,188.37
1959 Budget includes Port Dickson Centre and Ulu Klang Centre.

Indonesia

Indonesia is the largest nation of Southeast Asia. It is the most scattered
and the most disorganized. There is some evidence, however, of a slow evolution
toward a more centralized government, including more strength from the military.

Much discontent between the islands, resulting in a general economic break-
down, has brought the country to a near bankrupt condition. The cost of living
has doubled in the last two years. The government rate of exchange is so far
from reality that five and six times that amount is accepted in legal circles.
This makes almost impossible long-term planning.

Even more serious for the church has been the strong nationalistic require-
ments and restrictions on stateless people. This has involved many Chinese and
Indians teaching in the schools. Fifty per cent of the teachers in the Medan
Chinese School were forced out because they were stateless.

The church has suffened the loss of four outstanding leaders. Rev. and
Mrs. Yap Un-han, who were forced to return to Singapore, and Rev. and Mrs.
Luther Hutabarat, who died suddenly in the summer of 1959.

At the Annual Conference in 1958 Miss Gusta Robinett, an ordained mis-
sionary of the Woman's Division, was made district superintendent, the first
woman to hold that position in The Methodist Church.

All the ups and downs have been passed by our predecessors. Therefore, no one who may feel themselves most meritorious. Too many churches and ministers who have labored-earned in service that can not be named one by one. The toil, sweat and tears of its predecessors was not in vain. All that we have today is the fruit of the tree which is planted and nurtured by our predecessors. But especially important is grateful for the inclusion of God from the beginning to our predecessors faithful to this day. In 2004 when the GMI 82-year-old Gloria Church, really unexpected storm came whack. GMI congregation Gloria unexpected conflict and prolonged anyone until today. GMI conflict Gloria Church actually originated from the demand largely Assembly Church that should lemaga institutions under GMI Church Gloria provide financial reports to the Assembly of the Church. During this time, not all institutions provide financial reports to the Assembly of the Church. This simple request has received a tremendous response in panic from some Assembly Church and with all the effort of trying to divert the attention of the Church, including creating various conflicts, both in body GMI Gloria Church itself like any body GMI Region I. demand that institutions providing actual financial statement is no exaggeration. The objection to this request made the congregation wondering, is there something hidden behind all this?

Remembering him fondly, some of his Indonesian students have translated Yap's book and made it required reading:

Mengapa demikian?

(Wahyu 3:15-16).

RAJIN – SIKAP MEREVISI KHOTBAH

Jika ia benar-benar rajin membaca, rajin berpikir, rajin berdoa, maka usianya yang tua bukan menjadi penghalang tapi sebaliknya menjadi sumber berkat!”

Servant of God and the Sermon

Editorial:

E-Reformed Dear Netizens,

One of the contributions of Reformed Theology that gives great influence to the churches (including non-Reformed church) is a very strong emphasis in the "ministry of the Word". By reading the article that I took from the book Rev. Yap Han Un, Th.M. This, hopefully we can be reminded of the urgency and seriousness of the task of "preaching".

Congratulations contemplate,

Yulia

Is the most important task for a man of God? Based on the author's experience over 56 years, the authors conclude that the most important task of a servant of God is to convey the Word (preaching). If a minister does not convey the Word, then it is like a cat that does not want to catch a rat, a dog who does not want to keep the door, so he lost the most important functions and duties.

From the writer's observation for decades, the authors found a lot of ministers who only preach once a month in the Worship Service Sundays at church and if it has been ordained a priest, then it will be coupled with a short sermon before Holy Communion. The rest for three weeks the church invited the professors of theology, spiritual organization leaders, pastors who have retired or guests who happened to be passing to fill the pulpit. Such churches have, in general certainly have no program theme of the sermon and the preacher is too busy because he was always preaching that has been delivered so delivery is no longer as needed and as a result members of the congregation would not gain anything from the sermon.

Admittedly that is not easy to prepare a sermon manuscript. Moreover, sermon manuscripts that can meet the needs of the church members, this will be much more difficult. The author would like to share past experiences are quite bitter. At that time the author holds another position, in addition to being the pastor of the church also became a lecturer at the school of theology. Duty "to preach" the authors perceive as a heavy burden. If that Sunday happens to be another priest who was passing by and may be invited to preach, the authors feel like just spite of the heavy yoke and throughout the week, especially Sunday night, heart felt light and delicious.

A servant of God who was called to pastor, he is in fact not only responsible to God and responsible to the church pastored but he is also responsible for thousands of lives are lost. According to the author, the important task of a servant of God in herding trial is "pass the word" (preaching).

Servant of God who became pastor more aware of the needs of the church members of the guest pastors. The apostle Paul considered his relationship with members of the congregation is like a mother's relationship with her son. He once said to members of the church in Thessalonica, "But we apply friendly among you, like a mother caring for and take care of their children" (1 Thess. 2: 7). The task of a mother is breast-feeding the baby, and he would not allow another mother to take her place. Likewise, a minister responsible, he would assume that the "preaching" is an urgent task, so he will not be easily and carelessly leave the task to others pulpit. He will systematically, based on biblical truth and in accordance with the needs of the church and society, teach and train the members of his congregation.

URGENCY SERMON

The former pastor who has served for 30 years in Westminster Chapel, England, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, in his book entitled "I Believe in Preaching" said, "It seems to me, 'berkhotah' is the position of the most majestic and noble of all existing positions. If you want to be aware of this, then I without hesitation say that the urgent needs of Christian churches are preaching the correct and true. "He further said," The work 'preaching' can not be compared with any job that other. Preaching is the biggest job, that should be loved, which is laudable, that should be done and the work of the most magical. "Is Dr. statement Lloyd-Jones is excessive? Author reply was, "No!".

In his book entitled "History of Preaching, EC Dargon said," Preaching is an element and an important feature of the Christian religion. "He further said that" Sermon "is a creation of Christianity. Why is that? He said, "Because Founder Christianity is a 'Preacher'. Both predecessor, John the Baptist and his successors, namely the apostles, all of them are preachers who preach the Word of God. Therefore, the sermon teaching and proclaiming the Word of God, is the basic characteristics that do not change from the Christian religion. "

The Gospel of Matthew 9:35, "Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages; He taught in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom of heaven, and healing every disease and weakness. "

With the establishment of the results of the Pentecostal church, the apostles preoccupied with social affairs, eventually they asked members of the congregation, so that they are released from social duties, so as to concentrate on prayer and sermon (Acts. 6: 4).

After that, the apostle Paul, known as apostles Gentiles, also found the task of "preaching" is very important. He said that Christ sent him not to baptize, but to preach the gospel. He stressed that "preach" is a model that defined God to sinners hear the gospel and be saved.Paul tone asked, saying, "How can they call upon him, if they do not believe in Him? How can they believe in him of whom they have not heard. How did they hear about him, if not a preacher. "(Rom. 10:14). He testified in 2 Timothy 4: 6, "For I, my blood has begun to be offered, and when death is near." When on his deathbed, he felt the need to convey his final message to Timothy. Is the last message? No other, namely: "Preach the word, be ready always good or not good time ...." (2 Tim. 4: 2)

Let us read the history and listen to what is conveyed by the used of the Lord of urgency "sermon".

Reformer Martin Luther said, "The existence and life of the church is relying on the 'Word' which is full of God's covenant and because" the word 'this church is established, nurtured and survive. He further said, "The soul of the human spirit, can not be filled by anything, but can not otherwise be filled by the 'Word of God' .... with the 'Word of God' he became wealthy and lack nothing ". Luther argued that "the preaching of the Word" can not be negotiated, because the conveying of Christ, means to feed the soul of the human spirit.

John Calvin also highly emphasize the Word of God. He stressed that the characteristics of the true church is faithfulness in delivering the Word of God. He said, "Anywhere, as long as the Word of God maintained its purity, and reportedly, accepted and implemented in accordance with the Lord's Supper held by God, then there certainly exists the church of God."

The founder of the Methodist church, John Wesley wrote in his diary, "I was born was to convey the Word of God." At the age of 86, he had never been to Ireland leading the revival meeting. He used the time for nine weeks, visiting 60 towns and villages and preach as much as one hundred times and six times preach in the open field.

Although we do not share the views of Karl Barth's theology, but his testimony about the delivery of the Word of God we need to hear. He said, "Everybody recognizes that no one job is more valuable, more urgent, more useful, more could be saved, more beneficial than the conveying and listening to the Word of God. From the point of the heavens and the earth we can see, no matter what the situation is more practical than the conveying and listening to the Word of God. "

Deitrich Benhoeffer despite his theological views in question, but has a good view of the preaching of the Word of God. He said, "The presence of all the languages in the world, is used to convey the Word of God. By preaching has laid the basis of a new world. Through the preaching of the Word of God's people listen ... .., every servant of God must believe that Christ will come into every human heart through preaching, which is based on the Bible. "

Lukewarmness CHURCH AND SERMON

Perhaps many people do not approve the designation "lukewarmness the church" to reveal the state of the church today. It is true that, outwardly, the state of the church today shows progress. Churches in America and the crowded people like symptoms has not been seen in previous times. In terms of population density, Jamaica residing in Central Latin America is the country that most church buildings around the world. The Philippines is the only Catholic country in Asia that can be said in every house there is a sign of the cross and the church every week is filled with the righteous.

But if one looks closely at the state of American society, it is obvious crime, insecurity in the area of security, moral decline and destruction of households mushroomed, shows a striking imbalance with the circumstances of church growth. Crimes committed in Jamaica is an abuse of many churches there. Similarly, the circumstances that occurred in the Philippines.

In the 20th century church and the church in various regions of Africa reportedly growing and developing rapidly. But Africa, which in the 18th century was known as "the burial place of the missionaries" this dark, until today still shaded by the dark atmosphere, even increasingly dark. There have been massacres of ethnic, political systems are dilapidated, poor economy, widespread poverty, coupled with natural disasters and so on, so that the lives of the population is not assured. The events that occurred in Africa, raises a big question mark, how big is the actual effect of the increase of the church and the gospel for atmosphere "dark" in this Africa?

The author has been serving for 56 years, mostly living writers only work on one thing, namely to preach about Jesus Christ. Through experience and research for 56 years, honestly in my heart always arises the question:-century movement that promotes this mission, how much effect has been given by Christianity to the world? We often intone that Christianity is the only one that provides true salvation, but in fact what is among those that exist in the world has heard about the message of salvation?

Looks like element is emphasized by the "Science Church Growth", is "growth" in terms of quantity in the church alone. Church leaders often happy and satisfied with the increase in members, but to demand that members of the congregation of the Lord Jesus to be "salt of the earth" and the church to be "light of the world", is still far from reality.

There is no denying that the church now includes a church called God as "Laodicean Church", the lukewarm church. It is not wrong if the church now called 'cold', because the call to do mission work out so loud, but inside there is no warmth and excitement. Tata worship so well prepared, so that the visitors feel easement services; sermon delivered as best it often becomes "rhythm membuaikan". But the Lord said, "I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. I would thou wert cold or hot, so because you are lukewarm .... I will spew thee out of my mouth. "(Revelation 3: 15-16).

God wants the church to be "hot" and we try to ask yourself, "Is the service life of our" hot "(excited)? Are we pulpit ministry of "hot"?whether our prayer life, too "hot"? Do we often exalt "ratio", denounced the "emotion" and "movement" is being "lukewarm" in leading the congregation, and eventually became the church and "spit" God?

In the opinion of the author, if the church is to obtain a "revival", there is no other way except to return to the presence of God waiting for the "revival" of it. Seek His will, obey the Holy Spirit that God uses tools that awaken the church for two thousand years, namely: Sermons!

Jesus in Matthew 24:45 says, "Who is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord over his household, to give them their meals on time?" Who is the faithful and wise servant it? They are servants to feed people on time! To give "in time", it takes "faithfulness" while giving "eat", it takes "wisdom". If the term is used today, then that is intended to give "eat" is "preaching".

Dr. W. Sangster in his book entitled "Skill Preaching" does not have the right words to express the grandeur of the work of this servant of God. He only writes, "Servant of the Lord are called, are sent to teach the truth; a messenger of the Supreme King is the eternal witness of the Gospel! Is there a more noble work of this job? God the Father sent his Son is to do pekerjan's incomparable. "At the end of his book, he expresses his impression by saying," Preaching the good news of Jesus Christ, is offering the highest activity one can do. This job is a job that is sorely missed the angels, even the prince of angels would be willing to leave a high position in heaven, as long as you get this job. "

Professor of Homiletics well known in America, Dr. Andrew Blackwood said, "Profession as a preacher, should be placed dijajaran the highest of all professions." Based on research famous British pastor, Dr. John Stott, found that since the '60s, the general impression of the "sermon" is increasingly modest. In his opinion "slump" assessment of the sermon is a sign of the decline of the church. "

The importance of teaching "sermon" that were often ignored by the Catholic party, now has an important place. Theologian Karl Rahner argued that the urgent and needs to be resolved now is "difficulty in preaching". Very severe problems facing the church today is the lack serasian Christian beliefs with the real world, he said, "Many people left the church, because what is delivered through the pulpit is not meant for them, had nothing to do with their lives. Many problems and pressures experienced in life but not discussed in the ministry of the pulpit; .... this brings greater problem in the "sermon".

Archbishop of the Anglican church in England, Donald Logen trying to promote the renewal of preaching. He said, "God works a surprising thing, namely that stands between the Forgiving God with sinful man is" preacher "; standing between God as the giver to man as the recipient is "Preacher; standing between God as Truth and man as a seeker of Truth is a "preacher". Therefore, the function of the preacher is a job "unify" the sins of mankind with God's forgiveness, between human needs and the omnipotence of God, between man coveted by the revelation of God.

RENEWAL SERMON

Key to the revival of the church lies in the revival of God's own servants, and one of the signs of revival the minister is his sincerity, kehangatannnya and craft attitude in presenting the Word of God.What is meant by "seriousness" is his attitude toward God; "Warmth" is its attitude towards those who listen to his sermons; "Craft" is his attitude in preparing the sermon.

Seriousness - ATTITUDE TO GOD

Servant of the Lord is the one who stands between God and man, therefore he should show sincerity attitude before God. If he knows that he is God's spokesman and responsible to God, then he would not dare to be harassing a very sacred task of preaching it. He certainly will not dare to assume "preach" as a "job", so she called "artisan sermon" ... but with an attitude of trepidation and fear he will say to God, "Lord, beseech your grace to wear and lead me, so that before delivered a sermon in front of the crowd, I knew beforehand I would preach for themselves. And first I will give an example by carrying out the truth; let it be where I am in front of people, not just a "trumpet" of truth, it becomes the truth itself.

Famous American pastors in the 19th century, Dr. Philips Brooks said, "The preacher is one who deliver the truth to the general public.Inside there are two elements, namely: truth and character by character ...... Ecclesiastes shows the truth .... Truth itself is an element that does not change, but the character is the element that changes and grows. "

Colin Morris said, "The news that contains power, not delivered through the platform, but through the cross. Sermon successful, not only "hear" but also "views". If only rely on "eloquence", "skill preach", "knowledge of the Bible," it is not enough, because it still needs to be coupled with sadness, suffering, struggle, sweat, blood, so that it can express the truth proclaimed. Only then will we be able to conquer new hearts of the listeners.

WARMTH - ATTITUDE TO THE HEARING

This century is known for centuries that emphasize the "ratio". Lots of great scholars and pastors argue that we can only use the "ratio" to conquer the hearts of the audience and not with "emotion". There is a minister who met with an actor and ask, how could play a role that is so impressive and interesting? Where is the secret? And the minister also pointed out that in his sermon, he had no such power. With a laugh the actor replied, "The role that we could show so interesting as a fictional story that we have played in earnest, so that it was like a story really happened. But not so with you that convey the real truth, you display it with reckless, so people accept it as news just fake it.

Who said that in preaching is not required "emotion"? Jesus wept for Jerusalem residents who would not repent (Lk. 19: 4). Paul was very angry with the Athenians who worship the idols; for the sake of the true God, his heart became hot (Acts. 17:16). He was very concerned about the glory of God, so he tells the Philippians, "because, as we have often told you, and I declare now, with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ." (Phil. 3:18 ). Paul also tells the Ephesian elders: "Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I, during the night with not cease advise each one of you with tears." (Acts. 20:31).

Do not think to have such feelings (tears), only applies to New Testament times, because we also have to have at present. James Alexander said, "Servant of the Lord who does not have such a great feeling not to be able to be a servant of God that great anyway."

At the time standing in the pulpit, let it be remembered that we are taking care of the problem between eternal life and eternal death, and we are standing between the living and the dead. Therefore, let us look at essential services pulpit and take away the apathy and the assumption that the pulpit just as a means to talk alone.

Richard Baxter once remarked to her words as follows: "I was surprised to myself, how I can preach with a cool attitude without feeling and how I could be apathetic towards those who were in the bondage of sin? I should have come to them and begged them for the sake of the love of God to repent .... I often come down from the pulpit conscience uneasy, feeling sermon was less earnest and less enthusiasm. I do not blame themselves for less fluent in speaking and I do not blame themselves for not using words right, but I often ask myself, 'how can you be so in delivering major problems that have links to death and human life, should not I cry for them and let the tears interrupt sermon? Should not I scream with seriousness to say sin and their guilt and the very begging like a man who is facing a choice between life and death? "

John Stott assume an attitude full of earnestness very easy to attract the hearts and attention of people. Dr. John R. Rice said, "When a servant of the Lord standing in the pulpit, delivering a theme which is very important and serious about hell and fire without outages; This should cause it to bow before God and be earnest in their delivery. But regrettably, as many ministers in conveying important and serious themes with a relaxed attitude without feelings. Spoke at length about theology "nekara" without the embers in the liver and the water in the eye. Pastor in England, Campbell Morgan said, the three elements of the message is: the truth, clarity and emotion. "

Diligent - ATTITUDE REVISE SERMON

A servant of God who act sincerely to God and warm the audience, certainly also a servant of God who diligently to always revise his sermon. He must be diligent in reading the Bible and praying, diligent also waiting for news of the presence of the Lord; diligent reading spiritual books and other books that can add insights; diligent visit and know clearly the spiritual needs of individuals and family members of the church; diligently collect materials relating to his sermon.

Dr. Harry E. Jesssop said, "A servant of God whose unfailing demanding progress, can keep the heart that is both spiritual and sensitive will have a brain filled with extensive knowledge. A servant of God who are aged middle, which no longer requires advances, which are no longer read the books would be disastrous for the church.Servant of God as such, not only often repeat the message that has been delivered but also lazy to change and refine his sermon. Servant of God as such, not only losing passion for saving lives were lost, even the spirit to pray for the souls who lost was already no longer .... No servant of God because of old age no longer need to preach. If he really diligent reading, diligent thinking, prayerful, then old age is not a barrier but instead become a source of blessing! "
